Season 02

Summer

Fabric does the work.

In summer you cannot add anything, so everything has to be right on its own. Take away layers and what is left is fit, fabric and colour. That is why most men look worse in July. Get those three right and you look better in summer than in any other season.

01

The summer palette.

Lighter, warmer, and further from black than any other season.

WhiteShirts, tees, trousers
EcruLinen trousers, knits
SandUnstructured jackets, shorts
SkyShirts, polos
Faded navyTrousers, camp shirts
TerracottaThe one accent colour

Black absorbs heat and reads heavy under strong light. Swap it for navy or brown all summer and you will look cooler in both senses.

02

The summer capsule.

Eight pieces, all of them breathable, none of them fussy.

01

Camp collar shirt

Open collar, boxy cut, worn untucked. The one shirt designed to be worn loose without looking sloppy.

02

Linen shirt

White or sky. Creases are the point, not a flaw. A linen shirt that does not crease is not linen.

03

Knitted polo

The upgrade on a jersey polo. It holds its collar, drapes properly, and works under a jacket.

04

Linen cotton trousers

Ecru or faded navy. Wide enough to move air, tapered enough to look deliberate.

05

Tailored shorts

Hem just above the knee. Above mid-thigh reads like sportswear, below the knee reads like nothing at all.

06

Unstructured jacket

Sand, unlined, patch pockets. It turns shorts into an outfit and a shirt into an occasion.

07

Woven loafers

The summer shoe. Ventilated, smart enough for dinner, and they look better without socks than any other shoe.

08

Leather sandals

Dark brown, minimal straps. The only sandal that belongs near an outfit rather than near a pool.

03

What the fabric is doing.

In summer the fabric is the whole strategy. Everything else is secondary.

LinenLoose weave, fast drying, cools as it moves. Accept the creases and it is the most comfortable thing you can wear.
SeersuckerPuckered so it lifts off the skin. Built for humidity, and it never needs pressing.
Open-weave cottonOxford and chambray with air in the weave. Looks like a normal shirt, wears like a lighter one.
Tropical woolCounterintuitive and correct. High-twist wool breathes better than most cotton and never clings.

04

Three formulas to start with.

Written as layers, so you can swap a piece and the outfit still works. The guide carries thirty-six complete outfits across the year.

Weekend
  1. Camp collar shirt, sand
  2. Plain white tee if you want it closed
  3. Tailored shorts, faded navy
  4. Leather sandals or clean sneakers
  5. No visible socks

Shorts stop being casualwear the moment the shirt has a collar and the shoes are leather.

Smart casual
  1. Linen shirt, white, tucked
  2. Linen cotton trousers, ecru
  3. Woven loafers, brown
  4. Leather belt matched to the shoe
  5. Sleeves rolled to just below the elbow

Tone on tone in light colours reads expensive. Two shades of the same warmth beats two contrasting colours.

Occasion
  1. Unstructured jacket, sand
  2. White shirt, open collar, no tie
  3. Trousers, faded navy
  4. Loafers, brown
  5. Pocket square only if it is plain white

Summer formality comes from fit, not from adding pieces. The jacket is the last thing you add, not the first.

Nothing to hide behind.

Every other season lets you cover a bad fit with a jacket. Summer does not. If a shirt is too big it shows, if trousers are too long it shows, if a fabric is cheap it shows. Fix the fit once and summer becomes the easiest season, not the hardest.

The full system
