Season 01

Spring

Layers you can shed by noon.

Spring is the hardest season to dress for because you dress for two of them in one day. Cold at eight, warm at one, cool again by six. The answer is not more clothes. It is a small set of pieces that work in every combination, in colours that already agree with each other.

01

The spring palette.

Six colours. Buy inside them and anything you own goes with anything else you own.

Soft whiteShirts, tees, knitwear
StoneChinos, unlined jackets
OliveOvershirts, blazers, outerwear
Washed indigoDenim, chambray shirts
TobaccoBelts, loafers, suede
Pale blueOxford shirts, fine knits

These are starting points, not rules. Your own palette depends on your skin tone, which is the first thing the guide works out for you.

02

The spring capsule.

Eight pieces. Every one of them works with every other one.

01

Unlined blazer

Olive or stone. No shoulder padding, no lining, so it reads relaxed over a tee and correct over a shirt.

02

Oxford shirt

White and pale blue. The single most useful shirt you can own. Wear it tucked, open, or as a layer.

03

Fine merino crew

Navy or oatmeal. Thin enough to sit under a jacket without bulk, warm enough to carry a cold morning.

04

Stone chinos

Flat front, slight taper, breaking once on the shoe. The trouser that goes anywhere short of a boardroom.

05

Straight denim

Mid to dark wash, no distressing. Dark denim dresses up. Distressed denim only ever dresses down.

06

Harrington jacket

The spring outerwear answer. Light, water shedding, and it sits under a blazer or over a knit.

07

Loafers

Tobacco suede. Sockless in warm weather, with fine socks when it turns. Smarter than a sneaker, easier than a lace-up.

08

Clean white sneakers

Leather, low profile, no logos. Clean is the whole point. Grubby white sneakers undo an entire outfit.

03

What the fabric is doing.

Weight matters more than colour once the weather is between seasons.

Cotton poplinCrisp, breathable, holds a collar. The spring shirt fabric when you want to look put together.
Linen and cotton blendLinen's coolness without linen's creasing. The compromise fabric that makes spring tailoring wearable.
Tropical woolOpen-weave wool that breathes. If you wear trousers to work, this is the pair that survives April.
Lightweight denimTen to twelve ounces rather than the winter fourteen. Same look, half the heat.

04

Three formulas to start with.

Written as layers, so you can swap a piece and the outfit still works. The guide carries thirty-six complete outfits across the year.

Weekend
  1. Harrington jacket, olive
  2. Oxford shirt, pale blue, open
  3. White tee underneath
  4. Straight denim, mid wash
  5. Clean white sneakers

Shed the jacket at noon and the outfit still reads finished. That is the test every spring outfit has to pass.

Smart casual
  1. Unlined blazer, olive
  2. White tee or fine merino crew
  3. Stone chinos
  4. Tobacco suede loafers
  5. No socks, or invisible ones

The jacket does all the work. Everything under it is plain on purpose, which is why this works at dinner and at a meeting.

Office
  1. Tropical wool trousers, light grey
  2. Oxford shirt, white, tucked
  3. Navy knit tie
  4. Fine merino crew if it is cold
  5. Brown derbies

A knit tie is the one tie that works without a suit. The texture stops it looking like you lost the jacket.

Dress for the afternoon, carry the morning.

The mistake in spring is dressing for the temperature when you leave the house. Dress for where the day is going and put the extra warmth on top, where you can take it off without dismantling the outfit.

The full system

Thirty-six outfits. Four seasons. One wardrobe.

Your colours worked out from your skin tone, your style named, the fit rules that matter, and a capsule built to carry the whole year.
